Putting the Self Back in Self-Employment: Why You Matter Most

Plant and books

Having taken the plunge into self-employment with a 14-month-old daughter and a young family, I frequently find myself overriding the boundaries I’ve set for myself.

This winter has been especially testing, as illnesses have taken their toll, and it’s easy to lose sight of yourself while trying to care for everyone else’s needs. Sound familiar?

In moments like these, I’ve realised that self-care isn’t just a buzzword; it’s essential for me to be in physically and mentally at my best so that my business and family thrive.

But what does self-care mean to you?

It looks different for everyone whether it’s taking 10 minutes for a hot cup of tea, going for a walk, or carving out time to focus on personal goals.

I used to have a morning routine that I absolutely loved and without fail I would –

  • Meditate
  • Journal
  • Use my daily ritual cards
  • Burn Incense

Try doing this with a 13 month old. Lol

So I have had to adapt what self care looks like for me and how I fit that in around my family and my business.

What it now looks like is a short walk before I start my working day and a 12 minute recorded breathwork when the baby goes to creche.

Integrating Self-Care into Business and Life

Here are a few simple tips for making self care a non negotiable when you’re a busy self employed woman…

Micro Moments of Self-Care

Small but intentional acts can make a big difference, especially during busy or stressful times.

One thing I am committing to this month is giving myself time to map out what self care looks like to me.

Writing down all the self care moments big and small and choosing ones that I know I can enjoy during different seasons.

Similar to a vision or goal setting board, I am going to put this somewhere I can see it to reflect on the time I have set aside for myself each week and month to undertake some of these activities and create the ‘space for self care’ habit.

The Power of Boundaries

Honour your boundaries even when times get tough. Easier said than done I know!

Take a moment to reflect on the past year. Were there times when you felt overwhelmed or stretched too thin?

Often, these moments are where boundaries may have been crossed or ignored. Instead of seeing this as a failure, view it as valuable insight.

Ask yourself:

  • Where did I feel I needed more space for myself?
  • What activities or obligations drained my energy the most?
  • How can I create boundaries to protect my time next year?

Setting intentions for the new year doesn’t mean striving for perfection. It’s about being intentional with your time and learning to say “no” to things that don’t serve you, even when it feels difficult.

Self-Care as a Mindset Shift

Self care is a necessity not a luxury. As women, taking care of everyone’s needs before our own is something we are good at and it’s easy for guilt to creep in.

We cannot pour from an empty cup and when we take time to read the book, drink the tea, go for the walk, we create space for wellbeing, creativity and positivity.

Winter may bring mixed emotions, but it also reminds us to pause and focus on what truly matters—ourselves.
